GPS tracker for luggage and travel

A Bluetooth tag tells you where your suitcase was when somebody else's phone walked past it. A GPS tracker tells you where it is. On a trip across Europe that is the difference between “last seen in Frankfurt” and an address you can give the airline.

  • Built-in SIM
  • 1 month free
  • No long-term contract
  • Support from Greece in 30 languages

Why it matters

4.9 per 1,000

bags were mishandled in 2025 — 24 million suitcases, at an average cost of about $260 each. The rate keeps falling, but it is still one bag in every 204 passengers.

What to look for

A position, not a last-seen point

Bluetooth tags report only when a stranger's phone happens to pass nearby. A GPS tracker sends its own position over the mobile network, so you see where the bag is now — not where it was hours ago.

Battery that outlasts the trip

Charge it before you leave and choose a slower update interval while you travel. The TRP-920 runs 15–20 days per charge, the TRM-700 up to 50, so a two-week holiday is not a problem.

Small enough to disappear into a bag

The TRP-900 is 25 g. It goes inside the case, in a laptop sleeve or a camera bag — not on the outside handle, where anything visible is easy to remove.

One built-in SIM for the whole EU

No local SIM, no roaming settings, nothing to activate on arrival. The SIM is already in the tracker and the first month of tracking is included.

What it costs in total

Example with the Trakito TRP-900: the device, the free first month, then a 12-month plan.

Trakito TRP-900 · Tracker, one-off€79.00
First month of trackingIncluded
12-month plan (€5.83/month)€69.90
Total for 13 months of tracking€148.90

That is €11.45 per month, device included.

Prices incl. VAT. Longer plans cost less per month; the free month needs no credit card and does not renew by itself.

Setup tips

  1. Charge it fully the night before you fly and set a slower update interval; switch to a faster one only when you actually need to find the bag.
  2. Pack it inside the case rather than on a strap or handle, and keep it away from the metal frame so it can see the sky sooner.
  3. Photograph the packed case and write down the tracker's device ID — both help if you have to open a claim with the airline.
  4. Share the device in the app with whoever you travel with, so you are not the only one who can look.

Good to know before you buy

  • Airlines set their own rules for electronics with lithium batteries in checked baggage. Most European carriers allow a small tracker, but a few do not — check with your airline before you fly.
  • Inside an aircraft hold, a baggage basement or a stacked container there is no view of the sky and usually no mobile signal. Expect a gap in the trail; the tracker reports again once the bag is outside.
  • The built-in SIM is set up for the EU. If you are travelling further, ask us first and we will tell you whether the tracker will have data where you are going.
  • For finding a bag you are standing next to, a Bluetooth tag such as the TRAKITO Find Tag is often the better tool: no monthly cost, and airports are full of phones. A GPS tracker answers the bigger question — which country the bag is in.

Questions people ask

Can I put a GPS tracker in checked luggage?

Usually yes. A tracker is a portable electronic device with a small lithium battery, like a phone, and most European airlines allow one in a checked bag. Rules differ per carrier and change, so check your airline's dangerous-goods page before you travel.

Will it work while the plane is in the air?

No. In the hold there is no GPS reception and no mobile network, so nothing can be sent. The tracker picks up again on the ground, once the bag is out of the aircraft and in range of a network.

Bluetooth tag or GPS tracker for luggage?

A tag is free to run and excellent in a crowded airport, because it borrows the phones around it. A GPS tracker costs a few euro a month and works where there are no phones — a lorry, a warehouse, a hotel storeroom in another city. Many travellers use a tag in the hand luggage and a GPS tracker in the checked case.

Does it cost anything per month?

The first month of tracking is included with every tracker. After that, plans start at €5.41 per month with no contract and no activation fee.

What do I do if the airline loses the bag?

Open the claim as normal, then give them the position from the app in writing — airport, time and coordinates. A concrete location is far more useful to a baggage-services desk than a reference number, and it is on record if you need to escalate.
